Saudi woman beheaded for 'sorcery'
RIYADH: A Saudi woman was beheaded on Monday after being convicted of practising sorcery, which is banned in the ultra-conservative kingdom, the interior ministry said.
Amina bint Abdulhalim Nassar was executed in the northern province of Jawf for "practising witchcraft and sorcery," the ministry said in a statement carried by SPA state news agency.
It is not clear how many women have been executed in the desert-kingdom, but another woman was beheaded in October for killing her husband by setting his house on fire.
The beheading took to 73 the number of executions in Saudi Arabia this year.
In September, Amnesty International called on the Muslim kingdom where 140 people were on death row to establish an "immediate moratorium on executions."
The rights group said Saudi Arabia was one of a minority of states which voted against a UN General Assembly resolution last December calling for a worldwide moratorium on executions.
Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under Saudi Arabia's strict interpretation of Islamic sharia law.
Amnesty says Saudi Arabia executed 27 convicts in 2010, compared to 67 executions announced the year before.

Baha'i on pilgrimage to Assisi: education, ecology and dialogue against fundamentalism
Mr. Merchant how important is the Assisi meeting in your opinion?
Compared to the Earth Summit in Stockholm in 1972 – and the following one in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 - somethings has changed. The world is aware of climate change, of widespread devastation, of unhealthy lifestyles. The problem of resource depletion is now well known. The world has become aware of the devastation and ecological imbalances taking place. Against the background of these events, the appeal of the Holy Father is very significant and urgent for our time. Linking this to St Francis of Assisi, is most significant , something this generation needs to learn.
Ten years on from 11 September, radicalization is growing. How urgent is the Pope's invitation?
Insecurity among the population grows, causing the rise of radicalism and fanaticism in many sectors of society. People are trying desperately to cling to something, to ensure greater security for their lives and their future. They want to ensure their r community does not get harmed. While some are very busy trying to preserve the status quo others want to undo what has caused them great injustice. To stop this, religious leaders should try to transmit positive messages to their communities that emerge from meetings like the one in Assisi.
According to the Baha'i faith, many conflicts occur because the leaders of some religious communities instil prejudice. To avoid this we must be careful and be wary: in what we say and do, how we behave, how we relate to other believers. I also believe in the role of the media: if it supports positive initiatives such as this, we can hope for a turnaround.
It is a challenge on several fronts: a process involving educational systems, media and political and religious leaders. You have to take decisions and implement them, so everyone knows the results.
India has a rich spiritual heritage and is the birthplace of four major world religions. However, the pluralist fabric of the country is torn apart and there is a growing politicization of religion. What are you thoughts on this?
India is a country where the spirit of harmony and mutual co-existence are real, and with the support of the media, motivated by religious and political leaders can do much to promote peace and harmony. You can do good with awareness and education. With the will and commitment, change is possible.
Multi religious, multi ethic, multi lingual dialogue is taking place in India and there are many people working towards building peace so that the multi religious pluralistic culture of tolerance is not forgotten.
Radicalization unfortunately is the result of a small minority with vested interests taking advantage of the emotions of the vast majority. Political leadership must work towards nation building, sadly they often do not see beyond electoral victory and it is unfortunate that our systems of governance are so gravely flawed that the interest, security of the common people is often overlooked.
Religious leaders too, who are supposed to be at the service of the people, at times play on the emotions of their followers.
Education plays a fundamental role in promoting "understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial, ethnic or religious groups. Material education goes hand in hand with spiritual education and moral development
In India the vast majority in India, on a daily basis does not discriminate on basis of faith, they all seek friendship and helpful support of each other irrespective of the differences, but at times rumour mongering, mischievous elements can destroy peace. One must go to the original texts of the founders of the religion to understand their teachings.
The spark of divinity is in every human person, and while we cannot change history, we must drop the baggage of fanaticism, fundamentalism and develop a culture of unity in diversity, a life imbued with values, rather than become a slave of culture of consumerism or prey to senseless violence.
India is one country where spirit of harmony and mutual coexistence is lived out, and with the support of the media, well meaning religious and political leadership we can do a lot to foster peace and harmony
A lot of good can be done with awareness and education. Change is possible, if one is committed and strives to do so.

Zia Modi is an Ideal Baha'i women
(Times of India)
She's just back from a short vacation to Kenya where she rung in her 55th birthday with her businessman husband Jaydev Mody. A gaming-cum-safari club located right on the Equator has been her favourite holiday spot for years.
"We went there for our honeymoon," Mody says with a chuckle.
It was marriage that brought Mody back to India in the early eighties from the US where she was working with a New York law firm Baker & McKenzie. Jaydev and she had met through their lawyer-fathers. Returning to India meant starting her career all over again. The uncertainty of a career weighed on her, but she was here to stay.
Workstartedwithcourt practice. The bias against an Indian woman standing up and arguing in court hadn't disappeared yet. "The fear was how long would one have to keep proving oneself," she recalls. But early success beckoned when "typically hardened businessmen wanted me to argue their case".
Court practice went on for a decade until one day it no longer excited her. Those years also saw her taking up several public interest litigations like Floor Space Index (FSI ) valuation, when, on many occasions, she argued for free. "I didn't like the waiting period. There were constant adjournments. It didn't end," she says. "Most of the fights were silly. I got tired of all that."
And then the big switch happened. She crossed over from court practice to chamber practice, setting aside her father Soli Sorabjee's advice that she should be a judge. The Indian economy was opening up, corporate law was in the making. She was in the right place at the right time. "God moved me with the times, and my career moved with a changed India," Mody, a follower of the Bahai faith, says.

Baha'i Prayer in Hindi - Hey Ishwar Meri Aatma ko....

Afghanistan worst place in the world for women, but India in top five
The Guardian, Wednesday 15 June 2011
Targeted violence against female public officials, dismal healthcare and desperate poverty make Afghanistan the world's most dangerous country in which to be born a woman, according to a global survey released on Wednesday.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Pakistan, India and Somalia feature in descending order after Afghanistan in the list of the five worst states, the poll among gender experts shows.
The appearance of India, a country rapidly developing into an economic super-power, was unexpected. It is ranked as extremely hazardous because of the subcontinent's high level of female infanticide and sex trafficking.
Others were less surprised to be on the list. Informed about her country's inclusion, Somalia's women's minister, Maryan Qasim, responded: "I thought Somalia would be first on the list, not fifth."
The survey has been compiled by the Thomson Reuters Foundation to mark the launch of a website, TrustLaw Woman, aimed at providing free legal advice for women's groups around the world.
High maternal mortality rates, limited access to doctors and a "near total lack of economic rights" render Afghanistan such a threat to its female inhabitants. "Continuing conflict, Nato airstrikes and cultural practices combine to make Afghanistan a very dangerous place for women," said Antonella Notari, head of Women Change Makers, a group that supports women social entrepreneurs around the world.
"Women who do attempt to speak out or take on public roles that challenge ingrained gender stereotypes of what is acceptable for women to do or not, such as working as policewomen or news broadcasters, are often intimidated or killed."
The "staggering levels of sexual violence" in the lawless east of the DRC account for its second place in the list. One recent US study claimed that more than 400,000 women are raped there each year. The UN has called Congo the rape capital of the world.
"Rights activists say militia groups and soldiers target all ages, including girls as young as three and elderly women," the survey reports, "They are gang raped, raped with bayonets and some have guns shot into their vaginas."
Pakistan is ranked third on the basis of cultural, tribal and religious practices harmful to women. "These include acid attacks, child and forced marriage and punishment or retribution by stoning or other physical abuse," the poll finds.
Divya Bajpai, reproductive health adviser at the International HIV/Aids Alliance, added: "Pakistan has some of the highest rates of dowry murder, so-called honour killings and early marriage." According to Pakistan's human rights commission, as many as 1,000 women and girls die in honour killings annually.
India is the fourth most dangerous country. "India's central bureau of investigation estimated that in 2009 about 90% of trafficking took place within the country and that there were some 3 million prostitutes, of which about 40% were children," the survey found.
Forced marriage and forced labour trafficking add to the dangers for women. "Up to 50 million girls are thought to be 'missing' over the past century due to female infanticide and foeticide,", the UN population fund says, because parents prefer to have young boys rather than girls.
Somalia, a state in political disintegration, suffers high levels of maternal mortality, rape, female genital mutilation and limited access to education and healthcare.
Qasim added: "The most dangerous thing a woman in Somalia can do is to become pregnant. When a woman becomes pregnant her life is 50-50 because there is no antenatal care at all. There are no hospitals, no healthcare, no nothing.
"Add to that the rape cases that happen on a daily basis, and female genital mutilation being done to every single girl in Somalia. Add to that famine and drought. Add to that the fighting [which means] you can die any minute, any day."
Monique Villa, the chief executive of the Thomson Reuters Foundation, said: "Hidden dangers – like a lack of education or terrible access to healthcare – are as deadly, if not more so, than physical dangers like rape and murder which usually grab the headlines.
"In Afghanistan, for instance, women have a one in 11 chance of dying in childbirth. In the top five countries, basic human rights are systematically denied to women.
"Empowering women tackles the very roots of poverty. In the developing world when a woman works, her children are better fed and better educated because they spend their money for their family."
The survey was based on responses from more than 200 aid professionals, academics, health workers, policymakers, journalists and development specialists chosen for their expertise in gender issues.
Each country was also ranked in terms of six risk factors including: health, discrimination and lack of access to resources, cultural and religious practices, sexual violence, human trafficking and conflict-related violence.
In terms of individual risk categories, Afghanistan was deemed to be the most dangerous for health, economic/discrimination and non-sexual violence; the Congo is most plagued by rape and sexual violence; and India has most problems with trafficking.
"You have to look at all the dangers to women, all the risks women and girls face," said Elisabeth Roesch, who works on gender-based violence for the International Rescue Committee in Washington.
"If a woman can't access healthcare because her healthcare isn't prioritised, that can be a very dangerous situation as well."
The TrustLaw website has been in existence for some time, linking up local NGOs and social entrepreneurs with established law firms who are prepared to offer legal advice on a pro-bono basis. The groups are vetted by Transparency International.
More than 450 law firms are already involved including some from China. Among those that have recently benefited have been the charity Riders for Health, which delivers medicine to remote villages, and reviewed its contracts in Nigeria.

Dignitaries launch silver jubilee year for Lotus Temple
More than 400 guests – including government officials, along with representatives of the diplomatic community and non-governmental organizations – gathered at the House of Worship for the festive inauguration of its silver jubilee year.
"When I am in this beautiful Baha'i temple environment," the former President of India Dr. A.P.J. Kalam told the gathering, "I see everywhere around me harmony in thinking, harmony in action and harmony in every way of life."
Describing the House of Worship as "a temple of peace, a temple of happiness and a temple of spirituality," Dr. Kalam extended his best wishes to the Baha'i community in its efforts to eradicate prejudice, disharmony and conflicts in society.
"One of the greatest missions of this temple of harmony is to transmit the message to give and give to the entire humanity," he said.
India's current President, Shrimati Pratibha Devisingh Patil sent her "warm greetings and felicitations," in a special message to the celebration, held on 20 March.
A traditional Indian-themed dance performance, titled Rainbow, led by renowned dancer and choreographer Swagatha Pillai, was also part of the evening's programme.
After the speeches and performances at the Temple's Information Center, guests attended a special service in the House of Worship, which included prayers from the children's choir of the Little Angels School of Gwalior.
An "iconic structure"
The Baha'i House of Worship, popularly referred to as the "Lotus Temple", is one of the most visited monuments in the world. Completed in 1986, it has received an average of 4.3 million visitors every year – from all nations, religions and walks of life.
Kumari Selja, Indian Minister of Culture, described the House of Worship as "certainly one of the many facets that make India incredible."
"The Temple itself stands as an iconic structure reflecting the true essence and cultural ethos of our great nation which has welcomed people of all Faiths to its shores and sheltered them," Ms. Selja wrote in a message for the occasion.
"Like the lotus which blossoms pure above muddied waters, we too can rise above differences of caste, creed, class, community, nationality and gender and put forth our best efforts towards making the world a beautiful place," she wrote.
Communal harmony
The promotion of communal harmony as a prime focus of the Baha'i community was highlighted by Nazneen Rowhani, Secretary of the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'is of India.
"While the edifice of the Temple is dedicated to the worship of God," Ms. Rowhani said, "it should not become divorced from the social, humanitarian, educational and scientific pursuits which shall in the fullness of time afford relief and sustenance to the poor, solace to the bereaved, and education to those who suffer from lack of it."
India's Minister for Tourism, Subodh Kant Sahai, highlighted Baha'i social and educational activities in his message to the gathering. "As its contribution to the advancement of Indian society," he wrote, "the Baha'i House of Worship serves as a venue for non-denominational activities such as the spiritual and moral education for children and young people, as well as gatherings where adults systematically study spiritual principles and their application in daily life."
The House of Worship symbolizes India, wrote Mr. Sahai, "combining eternal and universal values with a forward looking approach."
Further events are planned throughout the year in every state of India to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the House of Worship.
