Dearly loved friends,

New Delhi, while being the capital City of India, also does the Indian Baha’i community proud by being the only Cluster to have more than one thousand core activities. The systematic teaching work being carried out at the House of Worship has greatly helped these community building endeavours and has opened new horizons for the progress of the Cause of God in India.

In its letter dated 28th January 2013 to the National Spiritual Assembly of India, the Universal House of Justice noted that the premises of the Baha’i House of Worship in New Delhi are being used for holding various educational activities, most notably Institute campaigns and that reports of these activities have brought great delight to the House of Justice. In light of this, the National Assembly was advised that..."In view of the potential for a significant rise in such activities in the period ahead, the House of Justice feels that it would be advantageous for there to be a facility that is associated with the Temple and dedicated to hosting educational programmes."

To this end, the National Spiritual Assembly has approved the construction of a multi-purpose facility on the premises of the House of Worship. The Temple Committee has finalised a conceptual drawing and is making efforts to obtain necessary permissions for construction. The Architects have been guided to give due consideration to both the beauty and functionality of the final design and to ensure that it is in harmony with its surroundings.

When the National Assembly shared an update on the progress made so far, the gracious response of the Supreme Body was to state that... “It shares the joy and pride that each one of your members undoubtedly feels as your community raises a facility with immense possibilities, a development that is both an acknowledgment of the marvellous accomplishments thus far achieved and a light that beckons the community to new horizons”.

It is estimated that more than Rs.5 Crores will be required for completing this task. The Universal House of Justice has encouraged the National Assembly to turn to the community of the Greatest Name in this country with the assurance that the House of Justice has “no doubt that they will respond generously to an appeal for funds”. Believers are urged to generously contribute towards this facility and for this purpose, a Savings Bank account, bearing No.108910100040397 in the name of “N.S.A. of the Bahais of India A/C MPFB” has been opened with the A.P. Bhawan Branch of Andhra Bank (IFSC Code: ANDB0001089) at New Delhi.

The National Spiritual Assembly is confident that the followers of the Blessed Beauty will respond to this request spontaneously and sacrificially and partake in the bounty of bringing this vision to reality - thereby assuredly attracting the blessings and confirmations of Baha’u’llah.

भारत में प्रभुधर्म के बाहरी मामलों के विभाग द्वारा आयोजित गतिविधियाँ

विश्व भर में आज भारत के युवाओं की आबादी सबसे अधिक है। यह एक ऐसी सच्चाई है जो देश के भविष्य के लिये असीम सम्भावनाओं और सम्भावित चुनौतियों के द्वार खोलती है। इंडिया इंटरनेशनल सेंटर में भारत में प्रभुधर्म के बाहरी मामलों से सम्बन्धित कार्यालय और भारतीय लोक प्रशासन के संयुक्त प्रयास से इस विषय पर एक सेमिनार का आयोजन किया गया।

समाज की दशा और दिशा के निर्धारण में आज नेतृत्व करने वाले युवा और निर्णय लेने वाले लोगों की जरूरत है-इस विषय का विश्लेषण करते हुये सेमिनार में विशेष रूप से समुदाय-निर्माण के कार्यों में युवाओं की भूमिका पर विचार किया गया। युवाओं पर मीडिया का प्रभाव और मौसम के परिवर्तन से सम्बन्धित मुद्दों को सुलझाने में युवाओं के योगदान पर चर्चा लम्बी चली।

भारत सरकार के युवा मामले और खेल मंत्रालय की अतिरिक्त सचिव किरन सोनी गुप्ता ने अपने उद्घाटन-सम्बोधन में कहा कि युवा ही हैं जो विचारों की एक नई लहर ला सकते हैं। नेहरु युवा केन्द्र संस्थान के महानिदेशक मेजर जनरल दिलावर सिंह ने कहा कि हम जब युवाओं के योगदान पर विचार कर रहे हैं तो हर प्रकार की स्थिति पर भी विचार करना चाहिये। दिल्ली की एक बहाई युवा पूजा तिवारी ने समुदाय-निर्माण के कार्यों में युवाओं की भूमिका पर बल दिया और कहा कि आज के युवा एक बेहतर दुनिया की बातें सोचते हैं और सामाजिक विकास में हाथ बंटाना चाहते हैं। दूरदर्शन समाचार के वरिष्ठ परामर्शी सम्पादक केजी. सुरेश ने युवाओं पर मीडिया के प्रभाव की चर्चा करते हुए कहा कि एक मीडियाकर्मी होने के नाते वह महसूस करते हैं कि इन मुद्दों पर गहराई से विचार क्यों नहीं किया जाता। आज ज़रूरत है कि मीडिया से सम्बन्धित मुद्दों पर पूरी तरह से विचार किया जाये।

मौसम-परिवर्तन के क्षेत्र में अनुसंधान और विश्लेषण की असीम संभावनाओं पर अपने-अपने विचार व्यक्त करते हुये तीन युवा प्रतिभागियों ने कहा कि मौसम के मिजाज में हो रहे बदलाव से उत्पन्न हो रही समस्याओं के समाधान पर गम्भीरता से विचार किया जाना चाहिये। लखनऊ स्थित सिटी मांटेसरी स्कूल में युवा सशक्तिकरण और क्षमता-निर्माण प्रभाग की प्रधान फरीदा वाहिदी ने कहा कि इस दिशा में आगे बढ़ने के लिये सबसे पहले तो तकनीकी ज्ञान की सीख की ज़रूरत है उसके बाद क्षमता-निर्माण की, इच्छा-शक्ति और फिर संकल्प-शक्ति की आवश्यकता है।

• दिल्ली स्थित राष्ट्रीय बहाई कार्यालय में ऑफिस ऑफ पब्लिक अफेयर्स ऑफ द बहाईज़ ऑफ इंडिया द्वारा एक अन्तर्धर्म बैठक का आयोजन 9 फरवरी, 2016 को किया गया। इस बैठक का उद्देश्य विभिन्न धर्मों के लोगों को एक मंच प्रदान करना था, जहाँ धर्मों के प्रतिनिधि अर्थपूर्ण सम्वाद कर सकें और सामाजिक मुद्दों पर निरन्तर ऐसे सम्वादों को जारी रखा जा सके। साथ ही, एक ऐसी प्रक्रिया को भी शुरू किया जाना इस बैठक के उद्देश्य में शामिल था कि किस प्रकार सामाजिक प्रगति के विभिन्न पहलुओं तथा एक बेहतर समाज के निर्माण में धर्म की रचनात्मक भूमिका की खोज़ की जा सके जिससे लोगों के बीच परस्पर प्रेम और एकता समान मूल्यों पर स्थापित हो।

ऑफिस ऑफ पब्लिक अफेयर्स ऑफ द बहाईज़ ऑफ इंडिया के शत्रुहन जीवनानी ने अपने स्वागत भाषण में कहा कि धर्म के नाम पर झगड़े-फसाद ने धर्म को बदनाम कर दिया है, लेकिन हमें यह नहीं भूलना चाहिये कि धर्म का बहुत बड़ा योगदान शांति और भाईचारे को स्थापित करने में रहा है और प्रगतिशील रूप से धर्म ने लोगों को आचारसंहिता दी और सभ्यता के विकास की प्रक्रिया में विभिन्न धर्मों ने बहुत बड़ी भूमिका निबाही है। बैठक के आरम्भ में तो संदेहास्पद स्वर का आभास हुआ, लेकिन जैसे-जैसे अर्थपूर्ण संवाद बढ़ता गया यह स्पष्ट होता चला गया कि इस मंच ने वह माहौल देने का वायदा किया है जो दूर-दूर रह रहे लोगों को परस्पर प्रेम और मित्रता के धागे में पिरो सकता है। सभी धर्मों के लोगों का मानना था कि विचारों की भिन्नता हो सकती है लेकिन गंतव्य तो सबका एक ही है - दुनिया में शांति और सद्भाव की स्थापना।

530 Bahá'ís Must Have No Affiliation with Churches

"...we, as Bahá'ís, must not have any affiliations with churches or political parties. But he feels certain that when you meditate on this matter you yourselves will see the wisdom of it. We, as Bahá'ís, can never be known as hypocrites or as people insincere in their protestations and because of this we cannot subscribe to both the Faith of Bahá'u'lláh and ordinary church dogma. The churches are waiting for the coming of Jesus Christ; we believe He has come again in the Glory of the Father. The churches teach doctrines--various ones in various creeds--which we as Bahá'ís do not accept; such as the bodily Resurrection, confession, or, in some creeds, the denial of the Immaculate Conception. In other words, there is no Christian church today whose dogmas we, as Bahá'ís, can truthfully say we accept in their entirety--therefore to remain a member of the Church is not proper for us, for we do so under false pretences. We should, therefore, withdraw from our churches but continue to associate, if we wish to, with the church members and ministers.

"Our belief in Christ, as Bahá'ís, is so firm, so unshakeable and so exalted in nature that very few Christians are to be found now-a-days who love Him and reverence Him and have the faith in Him that we have. It is only from the dogmas and creeds of the churches that we dissociate ourselves; not from the spirit of Christianity."

532 On Becoming a Bahá'í Should Withdraw from Church

"If a person is registered as a member of a church or similar religious organization he should withdraw from it on becoming a Bahá'í.

"In the case of new believers, it should be made clear to them in the course of teaching them the Faith that one cannot be a Bahá'í and also a member of another religious organization. This is simply a matter of straight-forwardness and honesty. A great part of the teaching of Jesus Christ concerned His Second Coming and the preparation of His followers to be ready for it. The Bahá'ís believe He has come. No Christian Church believes this; on the contrary, they either look for Him still, or have ceased to believe that He will come. For a Bahá'í to be a member of a community which holds such beliefs is disloyalty to Christ and hypocrisy towards the Christians.

"You should not formalize the method by which the withdrawal from the church is to be made, and certainly nothing should be added to a declaration form, if you use one. It should be left to the Local Spiritual Assembly which is accepting the declaration to satisfy itself, as it deems best in each case, that the new believer has already resigned from the church, or does so within a reasonable time of his declaration.

"In regard to the old believers, your Assembly should tactfully, and in a kindly way, make the Bahá'í position clear to them and gently persuade them to resign from their former churches. This is a matter for great tact and discretion. If such a believer remains adamant you will have to consider depriving him of his voting rights."

533 Bahá'ís Are Ardent Believers in Christ

"The friends should by all means be encouraged to withdraw from church membership and be made to realize that, though we as Bahá'ís are ardent believers in Christ, we do not and cannot support, church institutions and doctrines when Christ has come again and brought new laws for the world today and its present needs; to adhere to forms, mostly man-made, and now out-moded and no longer needed, is meaningless. This does not mean they should no longer associate with the church members; they should cease to be registered members of it."

The Open Letter 
We remain deeply concerned about the recent arrests of all members of Iran’s national Baha’i leadership. On May 14, 2008 six Baha’i leaders, members of a national coordinating body, which helped to address minimum needs of the Baha’is in Iran, were arrested in pre-dawn raids. A seventh leader had already been arrested in early March. No formal charges have been framed against them.
These arrests are shockingly similar to the abductions and executions of Baha’i leaders in the early 1980s. In August 1980, all nine members of the national Baha’i governing council were arrested and disappeared without a trace. It is certain that they were executed. In December 1981, eight newly elected council members were also executed. Since the Islamic revolution in 1979, more than 200 Baha’is have been executed solely on the basis of their religious beliefs.
We urge Iran to abide by the international human rights conventions it has ratified and release these detainees immediately. If charges are to be framed against them, provide them without undue delay a fair and open trial as well as access to legal counsel.
It is appalling that Baha’is are discriminated against in the land where their religion was born. In spite of being the largest minority in Iran, their religion is neither recognised nor are they allowed to practice their religion freely. Worse still, there has been a carefully orchestrated official policy of oppression against them.
Recently, a new wave of persecution has hit the Baha’i community: arbitrary arrests and detentions, attacks against Baha’i school children, dissemination of false inflammatory information in the media, denial of their means of livelihood, and expulsion from universities. Yet, Baha’is continue to be law-abiding, committed to the development of their country and do not take part in any political activity.
Also of great concern to us is a new draft penal code currently being considered by the Iranian Parliament. Its section five is particularly alarming. It mandates the death penalty for anyone who converts from Islam to another religion (apostasy), a provision which targets Baha’is, Christians, Jews, and other religious groups.
Such discrimination against the Baha’is, whose only offence is their belief in peace, justice and tolerance, is unacceptable. It is shocking that Iran, a country renowned for its great civilisation, philosophy, poetry and art, one which India has had long-standing historic ties with, would resort to such a flagrant violation of the fundamental right to freedom of religion.
We invite all like-minded people, believers in human rights, democracy and freedom, to join us in voicing our concerns to the Iranian authorities to cease persecuting the Baha’is.

US minorities watchdog names Amit Shah, Sakshi Maharaj in report slamming Modi govt on tolerance

In 2015, religious tolerance deteriorated and religious freedom violations increased in India. Members of the ruling BJP tacitly supported Hindu nationalist groups and used religiously divisive language to further inflame tensions.

These issues, combined with longstanding problems of police bias and judicial inadequacies, have created a pervasive climate of impunity, where religious minority communities feel increasingly insecure, with no recourse when religiously motivated crimes occur.

These are the key findings of the US minorities watchdog USCIRF (United States Commission for International Religious Freedom) in its annual report for the year 2015, just weeks before Narendra Modi will travel to the US and address a joint session of the US Congress in early June. USCIRF is a bipartisan US federal government commission that makes policy recommendation to the US President, the Secretary of State, and the Congress.

The report names top BJP faces including party president Amit Shah and Yogi Aditya nath and Sakshi Maharaj. It comes down heavily on the current dispensation and its Sangh allies for 'numerous incidents of intimidation ,harassment and violence' experienced by Minority communities, especially Christians, Muslims, and Sikhs. Talking about the anti-conversion law existing in six states, the report says , "While the laws purportedly protect religious minorities from forced conversions, they are one-sided, only concerned about conversions away from Hinduism but not towards Hinduism. Observers note that these laws create a hostile, and on occasion violent, environment for religious minority communities because they do not require any evidence to support accusations of wrongdoing."

1372. The Number Nine is Reverenced for Two Reasons by Bahá'ís

"Concerning the number nine; the Bahá'ís reverence this for two reasons, first because it is considered by those who are interested in numbers as a sign of perfection. The second consideration which is the more important one is that it is the numerical value for the word "Baha". (B = 2, h = 5, a = 1, and there is an accent at the end of the word which is also = 1; the 'a' after the 'B' is not written in Persian so it does not count.) In the Semitic languages -- both Arabic and Hebrew -- every letter of the alphabet had a numerical value, so instead of using figures to denote numbers they used letters and compounds of letters. Thus every word had both a literal meaning and also a numerical value. This practice is no more in use but during the time of Bahá'u'lláh and the Báb it was quite in vogue among the educated classes, and we find it very much used in the Bayan. As the word Baha also stood for the number nine it could be used interchangeably with it.

"Besides these two significances the number nine has no other meaning. It is however enough to make the Bahá'ís use it when an arbitrary number is to be chosen."

"The number nine which in itself is the number of perfection is considered by the Bahá'ís as sacred because it is symbolic of the perfection of the Bahá'í Revelation which constitutes the ninth in the line of existing religions, the latest and fullest Revelation which mankind has ever known. The eighth is the religion of the Báb, and the remaining seven are: Hinduism, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and the religion of the Sabeans. These religions are not the only true religions that have appeared in the world, but are the only ones still existing. 1374. The Number Nine Symbolizes the Nine Great World Religions and Perfection and is the Numerical Value of Baha.
"First, regarding the significance of the number nine; its importance as a symbol used so often in various connections by the believers lies in three facts: first, it symbolizes the nine great world religions of which we have any definite historical knowledge, including the Bábí and Bahá'í Revelations; second, it represents the number of perfection, being the highest single number; third, it is the numerical value of the word 'Baha'"

1375. Nine as the Highest Digit Symbolizes Comprehensiveness, Culmination

"Regarding your various questions: We must avoid giving the impression of being all tied up with peculiar religious theories; on the other hand, the 9 sides of the Temple, and the 9-pointed star require an explanation, and he feels the best one is this:

"Nine is the highest digit, hence symbolizes comprehensiveness, culmination; also, the reason it is used in the Temple's form is because 9 has the exact numerical value of Baha (in the numerology connected with the Arabic alphabet) and Baha, is the name of the Revealer of our Faith, Bahá'u'lláh. The 9-pointed star is not a part of the Teachings of our Faith, but only used as an emblem representing '9'. In telling people of the 9 religions of the world, that is, existing religions, we should not give this as the reason the Temple has 9 sides. This may have been an idea of the architect, and a very pleasing idea, which can be mentioned in passing, but the Temple has 9 sides because of the association of 9 with perfection, unity and 'Baha'.

"The Guardian feels that with intellectuals and students of religion the question of exactly which are the existing religions is controversial, and it would be better to avoid it. He does not want the friends to be rigid in these matters, but use their judgement and tact, sometimes one statement is exactly the right for one type of mind and wrong thing another.

"Strictly speaking the 5-pointed star is the symbol of our Faith, as used by the Báb and explained by Him. But the Guardian does not feel it is wise or necessary to complicate our explanations of the Temple by adding this."

We in Arizona have been using this more detailed workbook for our study groups.  It highlights many of the specific goals and strategies mentioned in the December letter, looks at overall themes, and includes milestones from the 2010 letter to the Counsellors.

The workbook indicates the various tasks assigned to groups, institutions and individuals, references metrics towards milestones to be achieved during the next plan, and provides questions for group discussion to foster deeper understanding.

Together, they offer ways to comprehend general themes and to also isolate specific tasks and objectives mentioned in the letter.   The workbook also reprints references from the 2010 House of Justice letter that are pertinent to its 2015 letter.

A tempest, unprecedented in its violence, unpredictable in its course, catastrophic in its immediate effects, unimaginably glorious in its ultimate consequences, is at present sweeping the face of the earth. Its driving power is remorselessly gaining in range and momentum. Its cleansing force, however much undetected, is increasing with every passing day. Humanity, gripped in the clutches of its devastating power, is smitten by the evidences of its resistless fury. It can neither perceive its origin, nor probe its significance, nor discern its outcome. Bewildered, agonized and helpless, it watches this great and mighty wind of God invading the remotest and fairest regions of the earth, rocking its foundations, deranging its equilibrium, sundering its nations, disrupting the homes of its peoples, wasting its cities, driving into exile its kings, pulling down its bulwarks, uprooting its institutions, dimming its light, and harrowing up the souls of its inhabitants.

"The time for the destruction of the world and its people," Bahá'u'lláh's prophetic pen has proclaimed, "hath arrived." "The hour is approaching," He specifically affirms, "when the most great convulsion will have appeared." "The promised day is come, the day when tormenting trials will have surged above your heads, and beneath your feet, saying: 'Taste ye what your hands have wrought!'" "Soon shall the blasts of His chastisement beat upon you, and the dust of hell enshroud you." And again: "And when the appointed hour is come, there shall suddenly appear that which shall cause the limbs of mankind to quake." "The day is approaching when its [civilization's] flame will devour the cities, when the Tongue of Grandeur will proclaim: 'The Kingdom is God's, the Almighty, the All-Praised!'" "The day will soon come," He, referring to the foolish ones of the earth, has written, "whereon they will cry out for help and receive no answer." "The day is approaching," He moreover has prophesied, "when the wrathful anger of the Almighty will have taken hold of them. He, verily, is the Omnipotent, the All-Subduing, the Most Powerful. He shall cleanse the earth from the defilement of their corruption, and shall give it for an heritage unto such of His servants as are nigh unto Him."

"As to those who deny Him Who is the Sublime Gate of God," the Báb, for His part, has affirmed in the Qayyum-i-Asma', "for them We have prepared, as justly decreed by God, a sore torment. And He, God, is the Mighty, the Wise." And further, "O peoples of the earth! I swear by your Lord! Ye shall act as former generations have acted. Warn ye, then, yourselves of the terrible, the most grievous vengeance of God. For God is, verily, potent over all things." And again: "By My glory! I will make the infidels to taste, with the hands of My power, retributions unknown of anyone except Me, and will waft over the faithful those musk-scented breaths which I have nursed in the midmost heart of My throne."

Dear friends! The powerful operations of this titanic upheaval are comprehensible to none except such as have recognized the claims of both Bahá'u'lláh and the Báb. Their followers know full well whence it comes, and what it will ultimately lead to. Though ignorant of how far it will reach, they clearly recognize its genesis, are aware of its direction, acknowledge its necessity, observe confidently its mysterious processes, ardently pray for the mitigation of its severity, intelligently labor to assuage its fury, and anticipate, with undimmed vision, the consummation of the fears and the hopes it must necessarily engender.

बहाई उपवास

01 मार्च से 19 मार्च

“हे दिव्य विधाता ! विरक्त हूँ जिस तरह मैं दैहिक कामनाओं, अन्न और जल से, मेरा हृदय भी शुद्ध और पावन कर दे वैसे ही, अपने अतिरिक्त अन्य सब के प्रेम से। भ्रष्ट इच्छाओं और शैतानी प्रवृत्तीयों से मेरी आत्मा को बचा, इसकी रक्षा कर, ताकि मेरी चेतना पवित्रता की सांस के साथ संलाप कर सके और तेरे उल्लेख के सिवा अन्य सब का परित्याग कर सके।”

बदी कैलेण्डर के अनुसार उपवास का महीना 1 मार्च से 19 मार्च है और इसे हम अला (उच्चता) का महीना कहते हैं। इस दौरान सूर्योदय से सूर्यास्त तक हम अपने को अन्न’जल से दूर रखते हैं और संयमित रहते हैं। जो सीमायें तय की गई हैं उन्हें लांघने की छूट किसी को भी नहीं है और न ही किसी को अपनी इच्छा और कोरी कल्पना के अनुसार इस विधान का अनुपालन करने का अधिकार है। सच, वे सौभाग्यशाली हैं जो उपवास की ऊर्जा से प्रभु के प्रति अपने प्रेम को प्रगाढ़ करते हैं। हालाँकि ऊपर से उपवास कठिन (कष्ट साध्य) लगता है, लेकिन अंदर से यह हमें अकथनीय प्रसन्नता से भर देता है। उपवास के द्वारा शुद्धिकरण का मार्ग प्रशस्त होता है। उपवास में असंख्य लाभ छिपे हुये हैं। 19 दिनों का उपवास मानवजाति के लिये बहाउल्लाह के अनेक उपहारों में से एक है। इन 19 दिनों के दौरान प्रत्येक दिन लगभग 12 घंटे तक खाने-पीने पर हम आत्मनियंत्रण रखते हैं, इन बारह घंटों के दौरान हम अन्न-जल कुछ भी ग्रहण नहीं करते यानि निर्जला उपवास धारण करते हैं। शरीर-विज्ञान की दृष्टि से देखें तो उपवास के इन बारह घंटों के दौरान भी हमारे शरीर के क्रियाकलाप सामान्य ढंग से संचालित रहते हैं। बहाई लेख हमें बतलाते हैं कि खान-पान पर रोक रखना ही उन्नीस दिनों के उपवास का मूल उद्देश्य नहीं है, बल्कि यह किसी अन्य महानतर उद्देश्य का चिन्ह है। उन्नीस दिनों की यह एक आध्यात्मिक यात्रा है, यह आत्मनियंत्रण और प्रगाढ़ रूप से प्रभु-चिन्तन का काल है।

उपवास के दौरान हम मन, वचन, चिन्तन और कर्म से अपने आपको शुद्ध और पवित्र रखने का सम्पूर्ण प्रयास करते हैं और इस प्रयास में जब सफल होते हैं तब स्वयं ऐसे आध्यात्मिक सुख और संतोष का अनुभव करते हैं, जिसका वर्णन शब्दों में करना मुश्किल है। सच तो यह है कि ईश्वर का धर्म आसमान की तरह विशाल है। उपवास इसका सूर्य है और अनिवार्य प्रार्थना इसका चन्द्र। ये दोनों धर्म के ऐसे आधार स्तम्भ हैं जिनके सहारे अच्छे कर्म करने वालों को वैसे लोगों से अलग रखा जाता है जो ईश्वर के आदेशों का अनुपालन नहीं करते हैं। जब हम प्रार्थना करना शुरू करें तब अपने को हर दुनियावी विचारों और वस्तुओं से अलग कर लें और कुछ इस प्रकार ईश्वर की इच्छा और उसके उद्देश्य के प्रति समर्पित हो जायें कि ईश्वर के सिवा अन्य कोई विचार मन में न आये। तब हमारी प्रार्थना स्वर्ग तक आरोहण करने की सीढ़ी बन जाती है और उपवास हमें सभी कुछ से अनासक्त कर केवल ईश्वर के विषय में सोचने के लिये प्रेरित करती है।

परम प्रिय मित्रगणों, हम कितने सौभाग्यशाली हैं कि बहाउल्लाह ने बहाइयों के लिये यह विधान दिया है। परम पावन पुस्तक ‘किताब-ए-अकदस’ में प्रौढ़ता (15 वर्ष की आयु) प्राप्त कर लेने के बाद अनिवार्य प्रार्थना एवं उपवास धारण करने का आदेश दिया गया है। यह ईश्वर द्वारा आदेशित विधान है। बहाई उपवास का समय निर्धारित है - 01 मार्च से 19 मार्च तक सूर्योदय के बाद और सूर्यास्त के पहले हम अन्न-जल ग्रहण नहीं करते। इस आध्यात्मिक दायित्व से उनको छूट दी गयी है जो बीमारी अथवा अधिक आयु के बाद शारीरिक रूप से असक्त हैं और जिनके लिये एक निर्धारित समय अंतराल के बाद दवा व भोजन लेना आवश्यक है, जो यात्रा कर रहे हैं या वैसी महिलायें जो गर्भवती हैं या बच्चों को स्तनपान कराती हैं।

उपवास के दौरान दान देने के आध्यात्मिक सुख और सहभोज से मिलने वाली प्रसन्नता के कारण ये 19 दिन बहाई जीवन-शैली में खास स्थान रखते हैं। खाने-पीने के लोभ पर नियंत्रण के अलावा आध्यात्मिक जीवन में भी उपवास की महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका है जिसका वर्णन बहाउल्लाह ने इन शब्दों में किया है: “उपवास और प्रार्थना मानव-जीवन के दो पंखों के समान हैं। आशीर्वादित है वह जो इनकी मदद से उड़ान भर कर सभी लोकों के स्वामी प्रभु के प्रेम के स्वर्ग में प्रवेश करता है।” अब्दुल-बहा ने भी कहा है, “आराधना-जगत में उपवास और अनिवार्य प्रार्थना प्रभु के पावन विधान के दो शक्तिशाली स्तम्भ हैं।” “स्तम्भ” शब्द का प्रयोग किसी विशाल भवन को सहारा देने वाले बुनियादी और मजबूत सम्बल के रूप में किया जाता है। इन मजबूत स्तम्भों के अभाव में भवन का सकुशल खड़ा रहना संभव नहीं है और इन दो आध्यात्मिक कर्तव्यों को पूरा किये बगैर हम अपने आध्यात्मिक जीवन को बनाये नहीं रख सकते। ये आध्यात्मिक स्तम्भ हमें स्थिरता और दृढ़ता प्रदान करते हैं। हमारे जीवन में, चाहे कैसी भी कठिनाइयों का दौर हो या सामान्य से अधिक सुख-चैन के दिन, ये स्तम्भ हमें अडि़ग बनाये रखते हैं।

इस प्रकार हम देखते हैं कि उपवास एक चिन्ह है। यह लोभ-लालसा के प्रति आत्मनियंत्रण का महत्व रेखांकित करता है और हमें याद दिलाता है कि जैसे हम अपनी भूख पर नियंत्रण रख सकते हैं वैसे ही हम अपनी भौतिक और दैहिक लालसाओं पर भी नियंत्रण रख सकते हैं। सच कहें तो उपवास एक आध्यात्मिक अभ्यास है, चिन्तन-मनन और ध्यान के 19 दिनो का, जो नियमित दिनचर्या और भौतिक सुखों से थोड़ा अलग हटकर जीने का अवसर प्रदान करता है। हम भूख पर तो नियंत्रण रखते ही हैं, अपने अस्तित्व की समस्त इच्छाओं, समस्त कामनाओं से ‘अनासक्त’ हो जाना ही उपवास का महत्तर उद्देश्य है। ‘अनासक्ति’ हमें कम-से-कम आत्मकेन्द्रित और आध्यात्मिक उद्देश्यों के प्रति अधिक-से-अधिक जागरूक करती है। ‘अनासक्ति’ की स्थिति को प्राप्त करना दरअसल महज इन उन्नीस दिनों के लिये नहीं है, अपितु इन उन्नीस दिनों से शुरू होने वाली हमारी आध्यात्मिक यात्रा अनवरत जारी रहनी चाहिये। इसीलिये बहाउल्लाह ने प्रतिदिन सुबह-शाम प्रार्थना और चिन्तन-मनन को प्रत्येक बहाई के लिये अनिवार्य बतलाया है। ‘अनासक्ति’ का अर्थ अब्दुल-बहा ने सरल शब्दों में समझाया है: “अनासक्ति का अर्थ अपने घर को आग लगा देना नहीं है, दिवालिया हो जाना या अपनी सम्पत्ति उठाकर खिड़की से बाहर फेंक देना या फिर अपना सब कुछ त्याग देना नहीं है। अनासक्ति का अर्थ है अपनी सम्पत्ति का गुलाम न बन जाना।” ‘अनासक्ति’ का अर्थ यह भी नहीं है कि हम अपना घर-द्वार छोड़कर जंगल में चले जायें और भूखे पेट बैठकर भजन गायें। अनासक्ति का अर्थ यह है कि सब कुछ होते हुए भी उसके प्रति मोह न रखें। यही अनासक्ति महत्तर उद्देश्य है उपवास का।

सत्य ही, मैं कहता हूँ, उपवास सर्वोच्च उपचार और सर्वमहान आरोग्य है स्वार्थ और वासना के रोग से मुक्ति का। उपवास व्यक्ति के आध्यात्मिक स्थान को उन्नत करने का कारण बनता है।

उन्नीस दिनों के उपवास से ठीक पहले 26 फरवरी से 29 फरवरी तक की अवधि को बहाई अधिदिवस कहते हैं। अधिदिवस को ’अय्याम-ए-हा‘ अथवा ‘उल्लास के दिन’ भी कहा जाता है। उपवास के लिए तैयारियों का समय होने के अलावा बहाउल्लह ने इसे दान का समय कहा है। जिसके बाद आत्मनियंत्रण की अवधि आती है। बहाउल्लाह कहते हैं: “बहा के लोगों के लिये उपवास के ये दिन स्वयं को, अपने सगे-सम्बन्धियों को और इनसे भी परे जाकर निर्धनों और जरूरतमंदों को खुशियाँ देने के दिन हैं, हर्ष और उल्लास के साथ अपने स्वामी के यशगान के दिन हैं, प्रभु की प्रशंसा और उनके नाम के महिमामंडन के दिन हैं।”

उपवास के बाद 20 मार्च को यानि बसंत ऋतु की उस तिथि को जब रात और दिन बराबर होते हैं “नवरूज़” या नवदिवस का उत्सव मनाया जाता है। यह बहाई नववर्ष का पहला दिन है। बहाउल्लाह ने नवरूज़ को एक सहभोज के रूप में मनाने का निर्देश दिया है। प्रिय धर्मसंरक्षक शोगी एफेंदी कहते हैं, ”वर्ष का यह वह समय है जब पूरी दुनिया का मौसम सबसे अधिक सुहावना होता है। इसलिये यह नये वर्ष के आरम्भ का उपयुक्त समय है जो उपवास के पावन माह (अला) के बाद आता हैं।”
